New Next Gen EU Funds grants: Bases announced for Neotec, Science and Innovation Missions, Aeronautical Technology Program and R&D Project Program for audiovisual and video game technologies

The regulatory bases of CDTI programs, of the Next Generation EU funds, have been published to promote R+D+I activities.

Below, we summarize what the programs to promote research, development and business innovation in Spain consist of.

The regulatory bases for 4 CDTI programs have been published. These are part of the European fund Next Generation. The grants will be granted under the modality of subvention. The main objective of the grants is to increase business commitment to R+D+I through the financing of projects to strengthen the competitiveness of the sectors.

Neotec

This help promotes technology transfer and helps the creation of new companies based on innovative technologies. At least 348 grants are expected to be granted to new companies so that they can carry out their business plan. Companies must be at least 6 months and at most 3 years old and must be highly innovative companies as defined in the RGeC.

As indicated by the Official State Gazette, new business projects will be financed by small innovative companies that require the use of technologies or knowledge developed from research activity and in which the business strategy is based on the development of technology, contributing to entrepreneurship and accelerating the transfer of knowledge from public research organizations and universities.

Science and Innovation Missions

Through this program, cooperative R&D projects will be financed, led by companies that pursue relevant research that proposes solutions to cross-cutting and strategic challenges facing Spanish society, improving the knowledge and technology base that Spanish companies rely on to compete, while stimulating public-private cooperation.

Missions grants provide for an amount of at least 897 M euros through the following calls: proof of concept projects (80 M€), interdisciplinary projects along strategic lines (73 M€), R&D projects aimed at the green and digital transition (296 M€), projects in public-private collaboration (140 M€), R&D projects aimed at the challenges of society (230 M€) and projects in international collaboration (78 M€). The final objective is the approval of at least 3,000 R&D projects that must be linked to the green and digital transition in a proportion of at least 35%.

Aeronautical Technology Program

R+D+I projects in the aerospace field will be financed, focusing on low and zero emissions, including investments related to aerospace and aeronautical technologies, with the support of the Aeronautical Plan.

The objective is to award and finance at least 65 companies for R&D projects in the aerospace field, focusing on low and/or zero emissions, including investments related to aerospace and aeronautical technologies, with the support of the Aeronautical Plan. The projects will be implemented by business consortia of between 3 and 6 participating companies (at least one of which will be an SME), and will last a maximum of three years.

Program: R&D Projects for Audiovisual and Video Game Technologies

The main objective of the program is to support the digitalization of SMEs in the audiovisual sector. Also promote gender equality, internationalization and the attraction of foreign direct investment. The estimated budget is 200 million euros and aims to support at least 100 SMEs.

R&D projects will be funded for the development of new technologies for application to the fields of audiovisual production and the video game sector, and for the transfer and adaptation of these developments to other application sectors, to position Spain as a reference center in this field

What will be the modality of the grants?

  • The grants will be granted under the form of a grant.
  • Grants may be annual or multiannual, with the duration specified in the calls.
  • The grants are funded by the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Mechanism dependent on the Next Generation Funds.
