9 startups in the neuroscience sector that are revolutionizing the Spanish market

More and more startups are making use of technology to try to solve the great challenge of neuroscience: curing mental illness.

The Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), with the objective of maintaining Spain as a world reference, announced the opening in 2022 of an innovative International Neuroscience Center, a multidisciplinary research space open to international groups.

In today's article, we present a selection of 9 innovative projects focused on neuroscience, which are revolutionizing the Spanish market:

Kymatio has developed a SaaS for the continuous management of internal cyber risk. The solution, based on neuroscience, is based on the fact that the people in an organization “are not agents who produce incidents, but valuable assets that manage information”. Therefore, in order to reduce the risk related to information security, Kymatio evaluates the level of awareness of each employee and, based on this, performs personalized strengthening measures.

Connective is a company specialized in telemedicine and artificial intelligence. The Conectiva team has developed the Functional Neurophysiology Analysis (ANF) for an objective and quantitative evaluation of the state of functional networks. The solution, harmless to the patient, facilitates diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, saving time and costs and avoiding misdiagnoses.

Newmanbrain develops software and hardware for biomedical applications in the fields of neuroscience and biomedicine. Aware of the great advance involved in correlating the activity of various areas of the brain with mental functions, it markets a solution that allows brain activity to be measured in a non-invasive way. In addition, through their software, professionals can integrate records from different devices, to observe them together and to correlate the variables obtained.

Neuroelectrics works to treat neurological and psychiatric disorders with personalized cloud-based neuromodulation. To this end, the team is building Starstim, a platform (based on mathematics, physics and biology) that will improve the lives of patients, providing the possibility of administering personalized brain stimulation therapy anywhere and at any time.

Oroi Wellbeing apply virtual reality solutions to generate emotional well-being through training and cognitive stimulation. The team has developed three applications with different functionalities (their combined use maximizes their effectiveness): Wellbeing, Cognitive and Fit, to awaken emotions by combating intergenerational distancing, cognitive training through exercises and facilitating the practice and adherence to physical exercise, respectively.

Psious has developed a tool for treating anxiety disorders, pain distraction and mindfulness through more than 70 virtual reality environments and scenarios specifically designed to treat a wide spectrum of pathologies. Professionals can use, through monthly subscriptions, Psious solutions for multiple techniques and access Psious Academy to learn how to work effectively with their patients through virtual reality.

VR Psychotherapy has developed Visual FASD, an application for the clinical diagnosis of FASD disorder using Artificial Intelligence and deep learning algorithms. In addition, the company has developed Mental XR, a complete suite for the treatment of neurocognitive and behavioral disorders such as autism or ADHD, which today affect around 19% of the population, through immersive technology in virtual reality.

Time is Brain works to change the negative impact that stroke, a disease suffered by 15 million people every year, has on patients who suffer from it and on their families. Aware of the importance of time to maximize patients' chances of recovery, they have developed Brain20, a portable medical device capable of, among other things, monitoring and knowing in real time the electrical activity of the brain from the moment the stroke occurs.

BrainGuard has developed a digital solution capable of predicting the onset of a migraine thanks to the monitoring of physiological variables, through the use of a wearable device, in a non-intrusive way and the use of a personalized prediction algorithm (with 75% accuracy). The BrainGuard solution helps to avoid pain and improve the quality of life of patients suffering from migraines. In addition, through the application, patients can access data to track their illness.
