CDTI grants and loans: Which line best fits your project?

In today's article, we'll tell you which CDTI financial instrument is the most suitable for each stage of your company.

The CDTI (Center for Technological Development and Innovation) is an entity under the Ministry of Science and Innovation that promotes innovation and technological development of Spanish companies, channeling requests for funding and support to R+D+i projects of Spanish companies at the national and international levels.

Among the main lines of CDTI, the following stand out:

Neotec - Non-refundable grant for start-up companies

When to request a Neotec? When your company is between 6 months and 3 years old, regardless of its billing

Type of help: 

Non-refundable grant of up to 250,000€ or 70% of the project. Beneficiary companies that incorporate the figure of doctors will be able to access a grant of up to 325,000€ or 85% of the total project budget.

The beneficiaries of NEOTEC aid can also access training for business training, offered by the Enterprise Innovation Institute of the University of Georgia (Atlanta).

No additional guarantees are required, on the understanding that the only guarantee required is the correct justification of the business plan of the project itself.

Beneficiaries:

Small companies (with less than 50 employees and 10M in turnover) between 6 months and 3 years old with a high technological component and a tax address in Spain may be eligible for NEOTEC grants.

The objective of the program is to support the creation and consolidation of companies in which the business strategy is based on the development of technology, so companies must submit a clear R&D plan with a high technological level, with a minimum fundable budget of €175,000.

Companies led by women entrepreneurs will be able to access the Neotec Women's line.

PID - Partially Repayable Loans for Research and Development Projects

When to request a PID? When your company has already invoiced, you have your own technical staff and you want to do an individual development project

Type of help:

Partially refundable loan with the following features:

  • The amount of PID aid will be a maximum of 85% of the total approved budget.
  • The TNR (Non-Refundable Section) may vary between 20% and 30%, calculated on 75% of the budget and will be allocated depending on the characteristics of the project and the beneficiary.
  • The interest rate on the loan is one-year Euribor +0%.
  • Amortization period of 10 or 15 years.
  • The first reimbursement is made 3 years after the center of gravity of the project, with a minimum grace period of 2 years from the end date.
  • By default, a 50% down payment is offered without the need for additional guarantees, with a limit of €500,000, and the rest of the aid is disbursed in installments and depending on the milestones defined in the project. Up to 75% of an advance can be requested if they present execution guarantees for the difference.

Beneficiaries:

Any type of company (SMEs and midcaps) with a tax address in Spain and a project of between 12 and 36 months, not initiated at the time of the application, for the creation and/or significant improvement of a production process, product or service, may be a beneficiary of PID loans.

The projects submitted must have a minimum fundable budget of 175,000€ for individual projects and 500,000€ for consortium projects.

The aid is intended for individual research and business development projects, so projects must demonstrate a technological differential aspect over existing technologies in the market.

CERVERA - Partially refundable loans for Research and Development projects in collaboration with State-wide Technology Centres

When to apply for a Cervera loan from CDTI? When your company has already invoiced, you have your own technical staff and you want to do a development project in collaboration with a technology or research center

Type of help:

Partially refundable loan with the following features:

  • The amount of the Cervera grant will be at most 90% of the total approved budget.
  • The TNR (Non-Refundable Section) may vary between 20% and 33%, calculated on 75% of the budget and will be allocated depending on the characteristics of the project and the beneficiary.
  • The interest rate on the loan is one-year Euribor +0%.
  • Amortization period of 10 or 15 years.
  • The first reimbursement is made 3 years after the center of gravity of the project, with a minimum grace period of 2 years from the end date.
  • By default, a 50% down payment is offered without the need for additional guarantees, with a limit of 1,000,000€, and the rest of the aid is disbursed in installments and depending on the milestones defined in the Project. Up to 75% of an advance can be requested if they present execution guarantees for the difference.

Beneficiaries:

Any type of company (SMEs and midcaps) with a project of between 12 and 36 months, not started at the time of the application, and whose tax address is in Spain, can be beneficiaries of CDTI's Cervera loans.

The Cervera line of CDTI supports applied business research and development projects for the creation or significant improvement of a production process, product or service, so projects must demonstrate a technological aspect that is different from existing technologies in the market.

Projects must have a participation of at least 10% of the approved project by one or more technology centers and a minimum fundable budget of €175,000.

The essential characteristic of this type of project is that they must necessarily be developed in a limited group of technological areas (Cervera priority technologies), which are defined as:

  • Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence
  • Eco-Innovation
  • Smart Manufacturing
  • Technologies for health
  • Safe and healthy food chain
  • Advanced mobile networks

LIC (Direct Line to Innovation) - Partially repayable loans for projects involving investment or spending in innovative technologies

When to apply for an LIC? When your company is already invoicing and you want to incorporate emerging technologies to make your solution or services more efficient

Type of help:

Partially refundable loan with the following features:

  • The amount of LIC aid will be a maximum of 85% of the total approved budget.
  • The TNR (Non-Refundable Section) may vary between 4% and 7%, calculated on 75% of the budget and will be allocated depending on the characteristics of the project and the beneficiary.
  • Amortization period of 5 or 7 years.
  • The interest rate of the loan is one-year Euribor +0.5 or one-year Euribor +1%, depending on the repayment period chosen.
  • The first reimbursement is made 1 year after the project's center of gravity.
  • By default, a 50% down payment is offered without the need for additional guarantees, with a limit of €300,000, and the rest of the aid is disbursed in installments and depending on the milestones defined in the Project. Up to 75% of an advance can be requested if they present execution guarantees for the difference.

Beneficiaries:

Any type of company (SMEs and midcaps) with a project of between 6 and 18 months, not started at the time of the application, and whose tax address is in Spain, can be a beneficiary of the LIC line loans.

The LIC line loans are aimed at applied projects, very close to the market, with medium/low technological risk and short periods of investment recovery, which are able to improve the competitiveness of companies through the incorporation of emerging technologies in the sector.

The projects submitted must have a minimum fundable budget of €175,000.

LIC A (Direct Line to Expansion) - Partially refundable loans for the purchase of fixed assets in assisted regions

When to apply for a loan using the CDTI LIC A line? When your company is already invoicing and you want to make investments in the acquisition of machinery, equipment or new facilities or patents

Type of help:

Partially refundable loan with the following features:

  • The amount of LIC A aid will be at most 75% of the total approved budget.
  • The TNR (Non-Refundable Section) may vary between 10% and 25%, calculated on 75% of the budget and will be allocated depending on the characteristics of the project and the beneficiary.
  • The interest rate of the loan is one-year Euribor +0.75%
  • Amortization period of 9 years, starting from the center of gravity of the project, which is calculated based on the duration of the project.
  • The first reimbursement is made one year after the project's end date.
  • By default, a 50% down payment is offered without the need for additional guarantees, with a limit of €500,000, and the rest of the aid is disbursed in installments and depending on the milestones defined in the Project. Up to 75% of an advance can be requested if they present execution guarantees for the difference.

Beneficiaries:

Any type of company (SMEs and midcaps) with a project lasting between 9 and 24 months and a single milestone, not initiated at the time of the application, and a fiscal address in Spain, can be a beneficiary of the LIC line loans.

The CDTI LIC A line is aimed at innovation projects, initial investment or initial investment for the creation of a new economic activity, in certain more disadvantaged Spanish regions through the improvement of the capacities of companies that propose technologically innovative investment projects that facilitate their growth.

The projects submitted must have a minimum bankable budget of 175,000€ and the investments must be kept in the beneficiary area for at least five years.
