According to the report Building the Future prepared by the Generalitat, the Catalan ecosystem has grown by 15.6% in the last year and 38% in the last three years. The report also notes the increase in jobs thanks to startups that have emerged in recent years, 23% more than in 2016. In the presentation of this document, Àngels Chacón, Minister for Business and Coneixement, explained that will allocate 20 million euros over the next three years to continue promoting the ecosystem.
The minister pointed out that Barcelona is attractive and “positions the city in an ideal situation to attract foreign investment and international talent.”
He also explained the objectives for the future, to reach 4,000 emerging companies by 2030, 400 of them companies with the capacity to scale and 15 with the capacity to become a unicorn. In Spain, Cabify, Glovo, Letgo and edreams have managed to become unicorns. Chacón commented that 64% of companies work with technologies such as bigdata, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence. And 43% work in the e-commerce sector. Joan Romero, the CEO of Acció, stressed that Barcelona is in the third position considered to be Europe's favorite hub among company founders.
