Wayra invests in women-led startups

Wayra, the Telefónica group's innovation hub, has launched the first Co-investment Day to invest in women-led startups.

The conference was held on November 22 in Gran Vía, Madrid, and was supported by Caixa Capital Risk, Inveready, JME, Kibo Ventures, Nekko Capital, Sabadell, Swanlaab and The Venture City. The event was attended by different startups that presented their project through a pitch, these startups could obtain up to 2 million euros in private investment. According to the study prepared by BCG, a global consultancy firm, and Mas Challenge, a community of innovators, highlight the importance of startups founded by women, since they are generating twice as much income as startups founded by men. However, women receive less capital. Wayra following the study, he observed the great business opportunity in this type of startups and its objective is to boost investment in women-led startups.

Blanca Drake, the director of strategy, operations and events at Telefónica Open Future, commented that the company aims to: “work to make society and the entrepreneurial ecosystem increasingly diverse, since this diversity, the plurality of perspectives and points of view, are an essential factor in the development of any project”.

Paloma Castellano, the director of Wayra Madrid concludes: “At Wayra, almost 20% of our portfolio has female founders and they represent 18% of the total investment of third parties in our portfolio. However, they have a failure rate that is 27% lower than the total portfolio.”
