After H2020 comes Horizon Europe

The next EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation for the period 2021 to 2027 will be 'Horizon Europe'

Horizon Europe has been approved with an endowment of around 100 billion euros for the period 2021-2027. This European funding program will be organized around 3 fundamental pillars:

  1. Open Science
  2. Global Challenges and Industrial Competitiveness
  3. Open Innovation

As far as they are concerned main objectives of the program, can be summarized as:

  • Strengthening the European Union's scientific and technological bases
  • Stimulating capacity for innovation, competitiveness and employment generation in Europe
  • Meeting citizens' priorities and supporting the EU's socio-economic model and values

What's new in the Horizon Europe Program versus H2020

  • Creation of an Innovation Council (CEI) to complement the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) to help both established and emerging companies in their disruptive innovations.
  • New research and innovation missions at EU level focused on social challenges and industrial competitiveness.
  • Greater openness to knowledge under the principle of open science.
  • Maximizing innovation potential across the EU, doubling up support for Member States.
  • More collaboration and synergy with other EU programs.

H2020 in Spain

The Horizon 2020 European Funding Program (H2020), which began in 2014, has financed 4,900 projects in which Spain has participated, with an endowment of more than 3,188 million euros. According to data from the European Commission, the projects in which Spain has been involved have agreed on 8.95% of the total investment of the program. Specifically, in 2018, H2020 signed 787 projects to which it allocated a total of 49.1 million euros. A year earlier, the program's contribution was 780 million, spread over 1,205 innovative projects and, in 2016, 834.4 million euros divided into 1,233 agreements. The top 3 projects financed by H2020 with Spanish participation are Airframe, which made a contribution of 28.52 million euros; Demogravi3 which obtained 12.28 million euros and Engine ITD-GAM with 12.27 million euros.
